Small Computers: The Mid-size Laptops

Some of the most popular mini-size laptops are featured in this article including Apple MacBook Pro, Sony VAIO EB, HP Pavilion dv6-3000, Toshiba Satellite L650, and Dell Studio 15

As computers become smaller and smaller, they offer portability without compromising the screen size, keyboard and other features. One popular computer is the mid-size laptop, with a 38-40 cm or 15-16 inch display. This article explores five of them. Currently, the price range of these laptops range from $US 999 to 1,399.

Apple MacBook Pro

Apple’s MacBook Pro 38cm is cast from a single block of aluminium for light weight, streamlined looks and durability. It takes pride in delivering amazing battery life of around 8 using Intel’s Core i5 processor plus an integrated graphics for high-performance home movie editing and games, as it encodes video quickly. It also decodes efficiently resulting in long playback time for iTunes movies and DVDs.

Dell Studio 15 (1558)

Dell continues to update their notebook designs. Its Studio 15 series notebook highlights this design in style, features, performance and price. The technical specification is first-rate with a Core i5 chip processor, ample memory and graphics. There is also a range of colours to choose from.

HP Pavilion dv6-3000

Hewlett-Packard’s dv6-3000 entertainment notebook PC series have several models and price points but they all have the same elegant design, quality components and build. HP managed to compete successfully in price and innovation. HP Pavilion dv6-3000 is the first midsize laptop to sport a multi-touch display, but also one that's kept to a decent price point despite using a premium metallic chassis. Its speakers also give audio punch along with its Core i5 and Core i7 chips processors. It is often regarded as one of the best value laptops on the market considering its feature being the first mid-size machine with a multi-touch display although not everyone may want to use this. It’s still the buyer’s need and choice.

Designed with personalization, Sony’s VAIO EB is available in different colours, eight of them. Its notebooks embrace a style that’s subdued rather than flashy, and with varying colours, including iridescent blue, Caribbean green, hibiscus pink or coconut white case instead of the traditional lava black, plus matte brown, white and silver. The 39cm screen is geared for HD video. It’s also one of the few mid-size notebooks with a separate number pad next to the keyboard.

Toshiba Satellite L650

Like most Toshiba notebooks the 15.6-inch Satellite L650 has a solid mix of features and said to be just perfect for students. Technology features include Intel’s Core i3 and Core i5 chips and spacious hard drives. There’s also a handy numeric keypad plus a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) port for viewing movies onto a flat-screen television. It is thought to be the cheapest of the five laptops identified here.

Known to be economical in the family of computers, these mid-size laptops are considered among the reasonably priced in PC system.
