The Top Ten Netbooks of the Year 2010

This article describes the top ten netbooks of the year that was - 2010

The advent of netbooks has radically changed the portability factor of notebooks, hither to unwieldy and heavy. In fact there remains only a very thin line between the notebook and the netbook. This being the case, sales of netbooks in the year 2010 has shown us, which of these are more popular than the others. Here is a summary of the best netbooks of 2010 in the regular and multimedia categories.

The top spot among the regular is occupied by Samsung NF310. This has a 10.1” screen and a unique wave design. Its performance is closely rivaled by the Asus Eee PC 1015PEM. This netbook has secured its place among the best netbooks of 2010 with the fact that it is the first of its kind in the netbook market. Its dual-core Intel Atom N550 processor handles overall basic performance with ease. Another strong competitor to Samsung is the Aspire One D255 which is easier on the pocket yet functions smoothly for everyday browsing, computing and media playback. Its forte however, lies in its longer battery life of 8 hours compared to the 6 hours delivered by Samsung.

Next in line among the best netbooks of 2010 is the Toshiba Mini NB305, with its single core, Intel Atom CPU and an integrated graphic chipset. This notebook is adequate for the basic tasks like browsing, handling email, processing documents and so on but its beauty and appeal lie in its metal keyboard with island-style keys, a spacious touch pad and a very steady battery life of 8.5 hours. These features indeed make it one of the best netbooks of 2010 and worth the buy.

Queuing up for fifth place among the best netbooks of 2010 is the Asus Eee PC 1001P. It has a good performance for basic functions and also has a matte display which reduces glare and enables working outdoors. Its strong suits however, are its price and looks. It has a smudge proof, textured lid which looks very expensive.

Among the best netbooks of 2010, those catering to multimedia also have been graded based on their popularity and usage. Taking the limelight is the Asus Eee PC 1215N with its 12.1-inch screen, Nvidia ION 2 graphic chip with Optimus, and a dual core Intel Atom N525 CPU. This combination provides a very stable and long battery life. Viewing streaming videos poses no problem to this netbook unlike the others, truly making it one of the best netbooks of 2010.

Next among the multimedia netbooks is the Eee PC 1015PN from Asus. Its performance is better than most but remains second to the Asus Eee PC 1215. Its primary shortcoming is that it operates with Windows 7 Starter, which disenables the Optimus. Otherwise, it has a good performance and deserves its niche among the best netbooks of 2010.

Occupying third place among the best netbooks of 2010 is Acer’s Aspire One 721. It has an AMD Athlon II Neo K125 CPU and an ATI Radeon HD 4225 for graphics. Its battery life is the only snag, as it is 4-5 hours lesser than the others. But if this is overlooked and other arrangements made for backup, it remains one of the best netbooks of 2010 as it price versus performance is unmatched.

Acer Aspire One 521 also has its place among the best netbooks of 2010, with its price acting as its entry ticket. Its performance for everyday, normal computing is at par with the others, but cannot handle video streaming like other multimedia netbooks. Its low battery life also serves as a deterrent.
